French copyright bill changes may favor Apple
French lawmakers may throw out plans to require online music stores to use interoperable DRM (digital rights management) systems to protect their wares when a new copyright bill comes up for debate Thursday.
A committee of the French Senate has recommended to senators that they amend the bill to remove a requirement that makers and users of DRM systems provide technical details to their competitors to enable the development of interoperable systems.

LUXEMBOURG: Upholding a landmark antitrust decision against Microsoft
would unfairly penalize the company, its lawyers said after a weeklong
hearing, while opponents argued that the ruling would ultimately protect
innovation and consumers.
The European Commission said it was merely asking Microsoft to obey the
law and not use its “hostile and aggressive” business methods and its
power as the dominant supplier of desktop software to muscle into other
